UPCOMING AND PREVIOUS WORK

A look back at some previous work as well as upcoming shows and projects

CLAREMONT PARK OPENING

Managing the formal opening of Claremont Park, Brent Cross, including liaising with artists, performers, designers and more to launch a new park in the heart of Brent Cross.

As freelance producer, I was in charge of the visuals and creative aspects of the day, including casting freelance performers, devising a treasure hunt, working with visiting schools. It was also my responsibility to ensure the safe management of the event including writing risk assessments and delivering health and safety briefing and responding to on the day incidents.

SCREEN 9

A verbatim piece recounting the story of the survivors of the 2012 Batman Shootings that took place in a Cinema in Colorado. Made in partnership with the Pleasance Theatre and Survivors Empowered, this production premiered at the Kind Head Theatre and Durham Fringe Festival before receiving 5 star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Watch this space for more…

“A Powerful piece of theatre… intimate and overwhelmingly intense.”  The Stage

“Celebrating the concept of survival, Screen 9 is a thought provoking piece ripe with narrative tension, raw emotion and admirable sensitivity." Culture Fix

"Performed with matter-of-fact understatement. These scenes have vivid insensitivity.” The Observer

"Screen 9 might just be the highlight of Fringe Purely due to the cast’s stellar performance and Kate Barton’s ingenious direction and stunningly written, devasted script.” Theatre Scotland

WORLD HERITAGE DAY

Planning and delivering an event for Durham's World Heritage Day, including event management, budgeting, planning and final on the day delivery.

EDUCATING RITA

Staged at Durham's Gala Theatre, this was a contemporary, North-East take on a story of wit, learning and an unexpected friendship. Directed by Rebecca Frecknell, this production was firmly set in Durham and discussed the city’s 'Town and Gown' divide as well as what it means to be educated.

As Assistant Director, I was responsible for noting the show once up, as well as supporting Rebecca throughout rehearsals and running line-runs and exercises in her absence.

“Amazing piece of theatre and a real treat. Gripped from start to finish.” North East Theatre Guide

“An enjoyable contemporary and relevant production, one of the best-in-house productions from Gala for many years.” British Theatre Guide

CONVERSATIONS IN QUARANTINE

A podcast series of recorded live in quarantine conversations with emerging and established artists across the UK. Created in March 2020 this was one of the earliest online projects during the unprecedented first lockdown. Presented live from the Assembly Rooms Theatre on YouTube and Facebook, these conversations allowed for audience’s to ask any questions they have about the company’s work. Average viewership as round 300 per episode.

Theatre companys included Spies Like Us, Ugly Bucket, Pigfoot Theatre and Front Room Productions. Guests included Ali Pritchard the AD of Alphabetti Theatre, Arthur Bostrom from Allo Allo and Nick Mohammed from Ted Lasso.

THE SOLDERS TALE

From Edinburgh Incidental Orchestra, The Solders Tale is one of Stravinsky’s most notorious works. A Faustian pact with the Devil, a book that can foretell the future – and behind it all, a charmed violin with uncanny powers over all who hear it. Starring Thomas Allen and the Late John Sessions. Directed by Hannah Noone, the performance took place in the Church Hill Theatre.

Assistant directing this project meant working alongside an orchestra as well as precision for the words to perfectly accompany the music. Conducted by Callum Zuckert, this performance was very well received and it was a fantastic experience working with such talented performers.

THEATRE RENOVATION

In 2018, I secured a 2.5m grant from Durham University to develop their student theatre, the Assembly Rooms to repair a failing asset and turn it into a fringe theatre for the city. Working alongside the university’s estates and facilities, I was the lead client on the project, meeting architects, contractors and oversaw the closure and re-opening of the theatre that spanned 14 months.

This is a project I am immensely proud of as it meant ensuring stakeholders remained engaged throughout the renovation project. Working within a constricted budget meant making careful and considered choices to improve the space in subtle but important ways.

EDGES

Produced by DULOG, Edges is the coming of age song cycle from Pasek and Paul.  It’s a coming of age, growth and self-discovery story of young people on the cusp of change.

With a run of 18 performances, this was my Edinburgh Fringe directing debut.  Performing at C -Main with a capacity of 200, we sold out all weekend dates and final night. With 5 star reviews we were nominated for a Derek Award for student musical theatre that year.

SWALLOW

Telling the story of three strangers as they struggle with their lives, Swallow powerfully takes a long hard look at the extremes of everyday life, and the often chaotic ways in which we deal with them. Directed by George Rexstrew, I produced a rival of Stef Smith’s powerful 3-hnader opening in the Assembly Rooms Theatre to rave reviews in Durham in November 2017, before being selected to perform at the National Student Drama Festival in March 2018.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

The bard’s timeless comedy Much Ado About Nothing was a transformative process. Set in the late 1940’s this production was a summer tour to outside venues across the UK and USA. Centred on two pairs of feuding lovers, we'll explore gossip, deception and the never-ending search for love.  This production combined the post-war euphoria with music from the era to create a sense of period, frivolity and farce.

We toured this production alongside a package of workshops to schools and vulnerable adults. We spent time in schools on the East Coast of the USA accompanying the show with a series of talks and workshops.

HAMLET

'Hamlet' opened in February  2016 for two exceptional sell-out performances. As a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s death but paralysed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state. Performed in Durham's historic Town Hall, reviews called it "perfection!" - The Palatinate.

THE BOY JAMES

Inspired by the life and work of Peter Pan author J. M. Barrie, 'The Boy James' is the story of one boy’s awakening to the harsh realities of adulthood. The show was described as a 'stunning production in every sense', whilst Palatinate declared that 'it is a tragedy that only a select few will be able to see this little masterpiece, but those lucky enough to experience it will not be quite the same afterwards'.
